The AHC Exam Covers the Following Competencies:

  • Advanced mechanical and electrified hardware product knowledge
  • Code application and compliance across varied occupancies.
  • Write and edit CSI/DHI format specifications for doors, frames, mechanical, and electrified hardware
  • Managing complex new construction and renovation projects

AHC Examination Eligibility Requirements

At the time of application, the candidates must meet one of the four pathways:

Pathway 1:

  • Individuals must complete all DHI courses under the AHC Pathway (COR101 through AHC315).
  • AHC390 – AHC Exam Prep will be recommended

Pathway 2:

  • Hold a DHC certificate
  • Complete the following DHI courses:
    • AHC307 – Advanced Detailing Doors, Frames and Hardware
    • AHC310 – Writing Door and Frame Specifications
    • AHC315 – Writing Hardware Specifications

Pathway 3:

  • Demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of experience in the door and hardware industry
  • Complete 100 hours of education related to the AHC Exam Content Outline

Pathway 4:

  • Demonstrate a minimum of 10 years of experience in the door and hardware industry

Certification is awarded upon successful passing the AHC examination.

Exam Format

The AHC exam is delivered in three parts using DHI’s testing partner Prolydian. Part 1 is completed online via remote proctoring; Parts 2 and 3 must be completed during the Classroom Series or at a DHI Canada Event. Bring a laptop for in-person parts; all responses are typed into the Prolydian platform.

Part 1 — Multiple-Choice (200 items) | 4 hours | Remote

  • Taken online through Prolydian with remote proctoring
  • You’ll receive email instructions from Prolydian to schedule your appointment
  • Must be successfully completed before Parts 2 & 3
  • Not offered during the Classroom Series or at DHI Canada schools

Part 2 — Scheduling & Doors/Frames | 5 hours | In-person

Develop complete hardware sets and door schedules.

Permitted References:

  • DHI’s Sequence and Format for the Hardware Schedule
  • Manufacturer catalogs (to verify product numbers/details)
  • NFPA 80 (2019)
    No other resources are allowed. A door schedule form is completed for each opening.

Part 3 — Specification (Essay) | 3 hours | In-person

Write portions of a specification; a section outline is provided.
